When dealing with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software you can often come across a lot of terminology, abbreviations, or lingo that may be confusing.

Below are many of the common terms that are used and what they mean.

Terminology (Abbreviation)

Description

Advance Ship Notice (ASN)

Typically refers to the EDI Transaction Advance Ship Notice (856) that is sent to inform the receiver of when/how a particular ordered item will be transported

Bill of Lading (BOL)

A document used by shipping companies to confirm goods received and transported. Often can be used to refer to the Bill of Lading Number in an EDI context that can act as a Tracking Number

Bill of Materials (BOM)

A comprehensive list of all the components, parts, and materials required to manufacture a specific product (a breakdown of parts)

Business Process

Refers to any process outside of the TrueCommerce process that would be beyond TrueCommerce supportability

Business System

Generic term to refer to any software such as an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, Warehouse Management System (WMS), or File-Based data transfer process

Comma-Separated Values

A Type of Flat File that separates each value by a comma (,)

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Software designed specifically to assist companies manage their core business process such as Accounting, Inventory, Employees, and Logistics

A type of Flat File that utilizes <Nodes> to distinguish values and hierarchy

Refers to any plain-text style document such as an CSV, XML, and JSON files that are usually intended to be processed by software to update a business process

Warehouse Management Software (WMS)

Specialized software to manage Warehousing Operations such as Inventory Control, Order Fulfillment, and Labor Management
