Product: Transaction Manager

Creating an Advance Shipment Notice can sometimes seem like a daunting task. Because each Trading Partner has different requirements, there might be one ASN choice or there might be several. Standard and Pick and Pack are two common ASN types, and knowing the difference between them may help you decide which to choose.

Standard (SOIP)

If you only ship one type of item or SKU, a Standard ASN would work for you! This type of ASN tells the buyer that they will be receiving PURE cartons (the cartons only contain one type of item). In these images, you'll see that each container only has one type of item, which could be communicated in a Standard ASN. The same goes for a Standard Pallet. If you ship one type of item or SKU on pallets, then a Standard Pallet would be the way to go.

The structure of a Standard ASN is SOIP: Standard - Order - Item - Pack.

Pick and Pack (SOPI)

If you're shipping a mixture of items, then you’ll want to use a Pick and Pack ASN. A Pick and Pack ASN can include either pure cartons or mixed cartons. These images show both pure and mixed cartons, which could be communicated in a Pick and Pack ASN. A Pallet Pick and Pack works the same way: if you're shipping a mixed cartons on a pallet, this is the way to go.

The structure of a Pick and Pack ASN is SOPI: Standard - Order - Pack - Item.

Seeing other choices besides Standard or Pick and Pack?

While some Trading Partners are ok with either Standard or Pick and Pack, some require other formats. If you're in the process of testing the ASN, it is a good rule of thumb to go with the simplest choice. If you're not sure, contact TrueCommerce Support or your assigned Implementation Specialist.
