Product: Dynamics 365 Business Central

Unit of Measures (UoM) are standardized quantities used to define how inventory items are counted, stored, bought, and sold when trading with your Trading Partner.

Each Trading Partner often has a standard set of Unit of Measure Codes that they work with requiring you to either Add into Business Dynamics 365 Business Central or Translate from Transaction Manager.

Creating Unit of Measures within Business Central

Unit of Measures must be created within Dynamics 365 Business Central in order to be used with Transaction Manager. You can create new Unit of Measures within Business Central simply by adding them to the Unit of Measure list and then leveraging the Code for that Unit of Measure within Transaction Manager.

Accessing Unit of Measures

You can open the entire list of Unit of Measure codes within Dynamics 365 Business Central simply by searching for "Unit of Measure" within the search bar and selecting the Unit of Measure under the Administration group

Select: Search Icon

Enter: Unit of Measure

Select: Unit of Measure (under Administration)

Adding Unit of Measures

You can easily create a new Unit of Measure code using the New button on the top ribbon and entering the entry into the list by assigning the Trading Partner's Unit of Measure code into the Code column.

Select: New

Code: Trading Partner's Unit of Measure Code

Business Central matches Unit of Measure Codes based on the 'Code' field. The International Standard Code is not used.

Translating Unit of Measures with Transaction Manager

You may run into a scenario where your Trading Partner requires a Unit of Measure Code that your business process does not utilize within Business Central or is simply abbreviated differently. Rather than creating another Unit of Measure that is similar to an existing one, you can simply Translate that item using a Lookup Table that allows you and your Trading Partner to continue use the desired Unit of Measure Code respective to each system.

Adding a Unit of Measure Translation

Navigate: Trading Partners β†’ (Partner) β†’ Translations β†’ Lookups

Find: UOM Conversion table in the dropdown

Select: Add New Item

Left Column: Business Central UoM Code

Right Column: Trading Partner's UoM Code
