It's becoming more common for System Administrators to install Applications in a Virtualized state - often called Application (App) Virtualization. In this configuration the software an end user is interacting with on their workstation does not actually reside on the employee's machine itself, but is rather located on a server that's extracted from the workstation itself.

Virtual application - User Interface & Gesture Icons

This allows a System Administrator to control the updates, installed extensions or add-ons, and general configuration of that application in a way that is normally restricted away from the end-user itself.

Note: TrueCommerce does not provide direct support to virtualized applications - any configuration changes must be made on the server where the application is being packaged from in order for most needed changes to be properly modified.

Virtualized Applications

There are many ways to virtualize an application, including using Microsoft App-V or CITRIX App Layering. But in general you can often characterize Application Virtualization by the following characteristics

Features

Non-Persistent Sessions

  • Configurations, settings, and modifications to application are reset on restart

No Local Install

  • Installation of the application is separated away from the machine

Files and data saved externally

  • Data does not save directly to a workstation but often goes to a remote path

Requires Server Connection

  • Application cannot launch without connection to a particular server

Distinguishing Virtualized Applications

Due to the way virtualization operates and the many different ways of configuring App Virtualization - it can be difficult to determine if an Application is Virtualized so it is always best to contact the System Administrator to determine if an application is virtualized.

However - it's not uncommon for there to be a "Badge" overlayed on top of the Application's Taskbar icon indicating it's a virtualized application.

Tip: You can often check an Application's taskbar icon for a badge indicating virtualization

TrueCommerce Support

If an application, such as an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software is virtualized TrueCommerce will not be able to support the configuration directly and will need access to the main server where that software is deployed in order to perform most changes.

If changes made by the TrueCommerce team reset upon restart of either the Application or your Workstation you will need to contact your System Administrator in order to make the changes for you.
