Product: Product Manager (PIM)

Categories are used by various industries to identify and group their products and services. Categories can be a hierarchy (taxonomy) or a simple list of product types. For example, standard categories (Domestic, Craft, Premium, Import, and so on) would be used by beer retailers to help customers navigate the products on their site.

Product categories can be created via an import file or managed manually via the admin menu. If a new category is imported via a subscription, the category will be created automatically and linked to the Brand associated to the product.

To manage categories via the admin menu, navigate to Unified Commerce > Product Manager > Taxonomy > Categories.

Categories configured here drive the options available within the following fields when editing a product:

Typically, the first level of categorization appears as the PIM brand name (e.g. Coach). Click into this option to expand your existing categorization structure.

To add a new category at any level:

  1. Click New Category

  2. Enter the category name within the given text box

  3. Click Save (near the top left corner)

Note: If you are creating a hierarchal categorization structure, make sure that you select the ‘parent’ category first before adding any supplementary categories. For example, if you wanted to add a new tier 3 option under Handbags > Satchel, select these categories from the lists and then click New Category above the list of all existing tier 3 options.

There is no limit to how many categories and levels of categorization that can be created within PIM. If desired, you could create a 4th level of categorization by selecting a tier 3 option and clicking New Category.

To delete an existing category:

  1. Select the category name, click Delete

Note: Deleting a top level category (e.g. Hats) will delete all other categories assigned to this (i.e. all associated tier 2 and tier 3 categories).

Categories cannot be deleted via an import. If a category has been imported by mistake, it must be deleted manually.
