What's an ASN?

An 856, or Advance Shipment Notice, is an X12 EDI transaction set. The 856 is also referred to as an ASN or Ship Notice/Manifest.

The purpose of an ASN is to alert a trading partner or buyer that a shipment has been processed and is on its way. Additionally, the ASN communicates the contents of the shipment. The contents may include shipment time, shipment quantity, tracking information, specific order information, such as product description or item numbers, and GS1 barcode label information.

The format and requirements for the ASN are determined by the Trading Partner.

How do I create an ASN?

The ASN can be created by Turnaround within Transaction Manager. For integrated customers, some ERP packages allow the capability to import the ASN into Transaction Manager.
